Hong Kong HK China Olympics

Who says Hong Kong doesn’t care about the Olympic games? Though the special administrative region sent its own separate delegation of athletes to the Olympics, Hong Kong people are proud of the grand opening ceremony and the chance to participate by hosting the Olympic equestrian events.

Saturday night foot traffic at Hong Kong’s busiest intersection slowed to a crawl as passersby paused to catch team China participate in an event. All over the city, screens from Jumbotrons down to those inside elevators were tuned to the games. (more…)

The Fabrik Gallery, the same people behind the first Banksy show are following up with an exhibition of artwork by Takashi Murakami. The Japanese contemporary artist, known for his colorful drawings, figures, and commercial savvy, is much sought after by international collectors. His work has attracted the likes of Louis Vuitton, who commissioned Murakami to add his artwork to a series of their bags. The connoisseur Kanye West is also known to sing his praises. (more…)

duke burger Hong Kong Soho

Burgers, like pizzas, come in all different shapes and sizes. And like pizza, the taste of a
true great one can be ascertained by sampling something basic, like a regular cheeseburger.

When I get hungry for pizza, I’m craving mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce, I don’t want Peking Duck, so I don’t care about things like Peking Duck pizza. Similarly, when I’m hungry for a burger, I don’t seek out a foie gras burger.

Here’s my rundown of some of the prominent burger joints in town, with an emphasis on the new spots. Let the burger battles begin! (more…)

Last night I checked out the premier of A Decade of Love, a film that was originally supposed to be screened as part of the Hong Kong International Film Festival back in March. Similarly structured to Paris, Je t’aime, the movie is a mixture of ten stories, each with a different director and cast. Every story centers around the concept of love.

DJ Misty rabbit Mimi Xu Hon

Friday night a crowd packed with club Volar regulars was treated to a special set by D.J. Misty Rabbit, the alter-ego of Kuskus label boss Mimi Xu. Misty threw down an extended set featuring old classics alongside the latest French underground sounds. Bouncing between Electro-Rock-Disco and other genres, she worked the dance-floor, playing a longer than average guest set.

My first impression - this girl knows how to intensify the vibe and work a crowd. Want a taste of what you missed? (more…)

Volar DI beach party Hong

Tai Long Wan beach wasn’t initially deserted on Saturday. The campers who were looking for a little escape from the city had their world rocked when the party crew descended en masse on their tranquility. They soon packed up and moved elsewhere. A few other small groups of boaters were on the long isolated beach, but soon they too were vastly out numbered.

What am I talking about? (more…)
